What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient technique that forms one of the core components of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves inserting very thin, sterilized needles into specific points on the body to restore balance and promote health. These points are believed to be aligned with a network of energy pathways, or “meridians,” which are essential to the body’s natural balance and function. While rooted in TCM, acupuncture has also been embraced by some modern medical professionals, who have seen its benefits for chronic pain, stress, and hormonal imbalances.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture uses a series of tiny needles to stimulate the release of endorphins—the body’s natural painkillers. It improves localized blood flow, reduces inflammation, and alters the nervous system response, decreasing pain signalling to the brain. With consistent sessions, patients may benefit from regulated hormone levels and, therefore, less stress and better mood.

Common Conditions Treated by Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment is versatile and can be tailored to tackle various health concerns. Some of the most common issues we treat include:

  • Chronic pain, including back pain, arthritis, and migraines
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Digestive disorders and bloating
  • Skin health issues, like acne, eczema, and the signs of aging
  • Women’s health and pregnancy effects

Acupuncture and Pregnancy

Acupuncture is increasingly recognized as a safe and supportive treatment for pregnant women. During pregnancy, symptoms like nausea, fatigue, back pain, and stress are common. Acupuncture may alleviate these problems without medication. Acupuncture may help:

  • Ease labour pains and prepare the body for delivery
  • Encourage proper fetal positioning for a smoother birth
  • Streamline postpartum recovery

Plan for Your Initial Acupuncture Treatment

Even when you know all the benefits of acupuncture, the idea of being treated with lots of small needles can be a bit daunting. Our team is always here to make sure you feel comfortable. If you’ve never tried acupuncture before, here’s what you can expect during your first visit to Integrated Functional Health:

  • Consultation and Planning—Before acupuncture treatment ever starts, we’ll sit down for a consultation. Once we know more about your health history and symptoms, we can tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs.
  • The Acupuncture Session—Once it’s time to begin treatment, we’ll gently insert thin, sterile needles into the affected area of your body. The process is generally painless, though you may feel a small prick or a warm, tingling sensation.
  • Relaxation Time—After the needles are in place, you’ll relax for 20-30 minutes in a soothing, comfortable room.
  • Post-Treatment—At the end of your session, we’ll provide guidance on next steps. We might suggest further acupuncture treatments or recommend other services like chiropractic care and physiotherapy.

Tips for Maximizing Acupuncture Treatment Results

Now that you know what acupuncture does, you might wonder how to extend your results. Thankfully, there are several strategies you can use to make the most of an acupuncture session. Here are our tips:

  • Stay Consistent—Regular sessions are key to achieving long-term results, especially for chronic conditions.
  • Always Communicate—Never shy away from sharing your symptoms or questions with your acupuncturist.
  • Keep Hydrated—Drink water after your session to support the detoxification process.
  • Listen to Your Body—Avoid overexerting yourself after acupuncture treatment. Give your body plenty of time to heal.

While acupuncture is one of our most popular TCM treatments, it’s far from the only thing we do. If you’re interested in other types of traditional Chinese medicine or facial treatments, ask us about these services:
