Holistic Nutrition

What is Holistic Nutrition?

Holistic nutrition focuses on a natural approach to a healthy diet and considers the individual as a whole, including all aspects of his lifestyle, according to holisticnutrition.com. This natural approach incorporates emotional, spiritual and physical health to create a state of well-being for optimum health. A holistic approach to proper nutrition encourages education on basic nutrition to develop a holistic diet that incorporates natural and organic foods, natural holistic supplements and food treatments for chronic health conditions.

What is a Holistic Nutritionist?

A Holistic Nutritionist views each client as biochemically unique with different health goals and needs. Diet, lifestyle, stress, genetics, thoughts, emotions, and environment are all considered to have an impact on our overall health and wellbeing. A Holistic Nutritionist uses this information to discover the root cause of symptoms, imbalances or concerns, and encourages the engagement of the client in the creation of their wellness plan. Through diet, supplement and lifestyle recommendations, the Holistic Nutritionist intends to support the innate wisdom of the body, which is believed to restore equilibrium (balance) when given the right nutrients and environment to thrive. Holistic Nutritionist’s also use education as a tool to support clients in the prevention of disease and promotion of health.

A Holistic Nutritionist can help you with:

  • Hormonal imbalances and reproductive health
  • Low energy and/ or adrenal fatigue
  • Food allergies and sensitivities
  • Skin irritations (acne/rash/eczema/psoriasis)
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Indigestion and gut health including issues such as IBS and IBD

If you suffer from any of the symptoms mentioned above, it's time to speak with your Holistic Nutritionist!

Macro-Nutrient Counting:

There are three Macronutrients (Macros)  Fats, Carbohydrates & Proteins, that have their own specific roles and functions in the body and supply us with calories or energy. The body requires these nutrients in relatively large amounts to grow, develop, repair and feel good!

Each Macro is almost always found in every item of food, whether that’s a healthy snack bar or a raw vegetable; the only difference is how the Macro  are balanced. As an example, the nutritional composition of an avocado is generally made up of 75% (good) fats, 20% carbohydrates and 5% protein, therefore this is clearly a fat-based food. On the other hand a banana consists of 95% carbohydrates, with only small amounts of protein and fats.

Macros are calculated based on your weight, height, activity level, gender, body type, and health and athletic goals. The trick is to understand how each Macro plays a different role in the body and tailor your diet accordingly!

Based on your goals ie) fat loss, weight gain/loss, increase energy level, recovery and decreased inflammation, your Holistic Nutritionist will design an individualized eating plan around the three Macronutrients.

Holistic Nutrition visits are covered by some extended health plans. Check with your insurer to see if you are covered for your visit!
