In order to de-stress and maintain her overall health and wellness, Nika enjoys training at her CrossFit gym preparing for the next local competition. Secondary to her love of CrossFit is her love of giving back to the community by helping other athletes.

Nika Allan, RMT

Nika graduated from the Ontario Massage Therapy Program receiving the Student Achievement Award with the highest class average in 2009. Having been a competitive figure skater herself, she developed a passion for helping other athletes and has directed her advanced studies towards Sport Massage Therapy.

Over the last 8 years Nika has gained valuable experience by focusing her attention on the following sports:

Swimming: 2015 Pan Pacific Trials, 2016 Olympic Game Trials, 2017 Canadian World Trials, 2017 & 2018 Jr. & Sr. Canadian Nationals

In clinic, treatments include Deep Massage Techniques, Active Release Techniques, Graston Techniques and Kinesiology Taping and Functional Movement Screening. This unique combination helps athletes attain optimal performance and recover faster. Injury rehabilitation, maintenance and prevention are her strengths and she enjoys treating athletes of all levels. Her unique treatment style and passion for sports coupled with her dynamic personality creating a winning combination.

SPORT MASSAGE THERAPY

Sport Massage Therapy is the application of specific massage techniques with the purpose of enhancing an athlete's preparation for, or recover from, the physical demands of training or competition. - CSMTA-
There are several phases sport massage can be applied, these include:

Pre- Event: Massage applied close to start of competition with the goal being to stimulate the Central Nervous System getting you game ready.
Inter-Event: Can help you cool down and prepare for next event. Massage is applied between events.
Post-Event:  This is usually performed 30 - 60 minutes after your competition and is a part of your cool down. It is aimed to decrease Central Nervous System Firing, relaxing muscles and addressing any injuries sustained in the event.
Training/Restorative: This is most often used in a clinical setting. Massage techniques are aimed at  injury prevention, management and rehabilitation.

ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES (ART)

​ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREENING (FMS)

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a  screening tool consisting of seven fundamental movement patterns; (Deep Squat, In Line Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Hurdle Step, Active Straight Leg, Push Up and Rotary Stability). This 7 Minute screen is used to assess and grade an individuals movement patterns. 

The goal of the FMS is primarily to detect any movement dysfunctions so practitioners can quickly intervene with treatment before movement dysfunction progresses into pain and or compensatory patterns.

-Athletes (recreational  - elite levels)

-Physical job demands
-Anyone into health and fitness or generally active.

GRASTON TECHNIQUE (GT)

Graston Technique is an evidence based technique using stainless steel instruments to assist in soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). These specific tools are designed to help the practitioner identify areas of restriction and break up the scar tissue. 

The primary goal of GT is to cause slight deliberate trauma to the soft tissue initializing an inflammatory response which aids in the healing process.

GT have been successfully used to treat long lasting conditions as well as to decrease pain and assist in the healing process of acute trauma. Some of the conditions GT can be useful in are:
-sprains and strains (acute and chronic)
-scar tissue
-decreased mobility and flexibility
-joint and soft tissue pain
-headache relief
-plantar fasciitis

KINESIOLOGY TAPING
​RockTape

​RockTape is a type of kinesiology tape that can be used to treat sports and non-sports injuries, including shin splints, plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, joint pain, neck and back pain.

The stretchy composition of RockTape is designed to microscopically lift the skin away from the muscle and fascia below, creating a decompressive effect. It can be also be applied to create functioning support to joints and can be used over severely bruised or swollen areas to aid in inflammation reduction.

Last but not least, RockTape can be applied to specific muscles and fascial chains to aid in body awareness and motor control.
